1974 Trivia: Arafat at the UN

Welcome to the month of my birth. September. The year of my birth was 1974...so as you can figure out, I will be 29 this month. You still have time to purchase gifts. Perhaps gifts will offset the trauma that comes with turning 29.

To celebrate the occasion of my birth, I will post a little fact about 1974 each day this month.

In 1974, PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat made his first appearance before the U.N. He did so with a gun strapped to his side, claiming "I have come bearing an olive branch and a freedom fighter's gun. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand."

I remember when I turned 24 (have I told you this story?). That was the worst year for me, by a long shot. A week after that birthday, I was filling out a survey and the age groups were "18 to 24" or "25 to 40". That's when it hit me that 24 was the last year to get your stuff together and grow the heck up. Look at what 25 year olds get: cheaper insurance, run for congress, etc. You are basically an adult whether you want to be or not.

Nothing really new happens at 30, so no worries. Unless you were really chomping at the bit to run for US Senate.

I think you told me it was a bad year, but not because of age. As for Senate, I have been toying with the idea, actually. "A vote for me is a vote for the Axis of Naughty." Do you think more than 3 people will know what the hell I'm talking about?

Bah! I was born in 1963 so you can't be old until I'm old, and I'm not old yet.
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of 1974 isn't Yasser Arafat or Richard Nixon or whatever else happened in that year, but "I Shot The Sheriff." Odd.

Yay! That means I'm not old yet either!

I tried to stay 25, but when my younger brother became my older brother it didn't really work so well.

Another 1974 child here. Born on the 20th. Thanks for the site, very cool. Happy Birthday! PS how about a post of the hippest outfits? My mom was a total disco queen she loved her scarfs tight tees and furry jackets!
