Is it too late to replace Kerry and why?

Discuss.

You think he is that far gone huh? I think that if the Dems tried to replace him the backlash would probably be worse than letting him run and lose.

Yes. Inertia. Neither party is flexible enough to make that sort of mid-stream change, especially this late in the game. The official nominations are just show anymore, they've been campaigning for real for a couple of months now.

Anything is possible. It will depend on wheter the level of dissatisfaction amongst the 'anybody but Bush' base of support overcomes that driving sentiment.

I've seen it speculated that if such an internal coup is attempted, that there is likely some show stopper skeleton in the Kerry closet that would be either leaked or trotted out by the Dem machine - and that Kerry will suddenly find himself alone blaming Rove for the 'outrage' of bringing it up.

Probably the only thing keeping him afloat at this point is the lack of a viable replacement. Hillary? Extremely doubtful - she's telegraphed to the faithful that her plan is to make her attempt in 08, when the odds are better, instead of tossing the dice in a showdown against W.

-If- the coup attempt is made - look for it to explode about three weeks before the Dem Convention - no later than that, as there would be insufficient time to clean up the mess and rally support behind a replacement, but not much earlier, as it might give Kerry a chance to stagger back onto his feet.

I saw Al Sharpton on the street last night in NYC. He was all alone and looked as if he was probably available. He wouldnt win, mind you, but he'd certainly be entertaining. And, while I cannot claim to like the man, he can certainly speak well in public. That said, I think it is way too late to replace Kerry. Any attempts to tinker with the lineup now would be a disaster. No, the real question should be, who will Kerry's Vice-President candidate be? That has the possibility of injecting some real excitement into his campaign.

If there is some rotting skeleton is his closet then my advice to Kerry would be to get it out in the open NOW. That way when, come October, the repubs say "but he admitted to poisoning his mother and stuffing her and sitting her in the window", the dems can just retort: "yeah, but we went though all that back in May... it's old news, move on!"

I still think they should bring back Howard Dean, if only for the entertainment value.

"YEEEEEEARGH!!!!!"
