This one was inspired by my four-year-old niece. Last night I took her with me to the store and after checking out, I had 3 cents change. I gave it to my niece, who of course lost every penny before we even got to the car.
The question: How much money could you burn or throw away (never to be found by anyone) without feeling guilty?
Discuss.
Posted by Jennifer at May 10, 2004 07:52 AMI do that every time I launch a rocket. :D So far, a few hundred dollars worth a year.
Posted by: Ted at May 10, 2004 08:34 AMBut you're getting something for your money.
Posted by: Jennifer at May 10, 2004 08:35 AMMaybe a $1 bill, if it were particularly nasty.
It's the "never to be found" part of the question that gets to me. I've been known to leave spare change on top of gumball machines, because I know some kid is going to find it and think, "This is the greatest day of my life!"
Anyone who says money can't buy happiness has never seen a kid find a quarter.
Posted by: Harvey at May 10, 2004 08:37 AMVariable - depends on how much money I started with, and how much I had when I was done.
If I started with a couple of million, I'd have no problem tossing around a few hundred thousand, a la Brewster's Millions.
If I had $20, well, some loose change.
Posted by: Wind Rider at May 10, 2004 11:20 AMNone. I couldn't do it. If I was giving it away, or if I was going to get something in return - maybe a few dollars here and there. Or even a hundred dollars here and there. But to have it just disappear, even a penny would make me a little guilty.
Posted by: Tim at May 10, 2004 12:15 PMHmmmm...
Depends on how you're defnining "throwing away" because I've "loaned" over $40,000 (to two different people) that I never really intended to ask to be repaid, but that may not be what you mean.
In terms of just "throwing on the ground" away, I don't feel guilty, I feel more frustration at what I could have bought with that money. Normally anything less than $10 doesn't bother me.
Posted by: Jack at May 10, 2004 01:58 PM..I'm with Jack... throwing away money to a friend or family member is what is expected of you, in a certain sense... otherwise.. if I've got it in my pocket, then I don't mind losing it.. heh... a fool and their money.. aparently... still, it's only paper....
Posted by: Eric at May 10, 2004 07:47 PMHarvey, I love it! I'm gonna start leaving quarters on gumball machines!
