During this week in 1939, the SS St. Louis was denied port in Cuba and the U.S. The 900 Jewish refugees on board were returned to Europe, where many died in concentration camps.

The St. Louis was also turned away by Canada. Not a good moment for any of us. The only country that would accept them was the Netherlands. And the Netherlands was taken by the Nazis a year later.
