With car registration and insurance coming up, I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to unload my car altogether. I have a bus pass, after all. It's convenient to hop in my car and run to the store any time I wish, or to drive to my parents' house whenever I like, but is it worth the cost? I'm within walking distance to work (and walk there now), and the buses run whenever the university is holding classes...so a car is really a convenience more than a necessity. A very nice convenience.
I'm undecided...any thoughts?
Posted by Jennifer at October 20, 2005 06:05 PM | TrackBackWelp, I can only make the same argument you made. It's a nice convience but you'll make some money and then save some more if you sell it -- 'specially if you're making payments on it and you have a high insurance premium. I dunno. Yer call.
Posted by: Tuning Spork at October 20, 2005 06:23 PMBut what about the trips for groceries, target, dry cleaning? If you can do those on the bus/walking, I envy you. Every time I think I don't need my car, I remember the 20-bag Wal-Mart runs and think again.
Posted by: sis at October 20, 2005 11:08 PMThe sis makes a good point - if you live in an urban area where grocers, retailers, and service providers are all within a reasonable walking distance, then dump the car. However, if you're going to need your car to truck stuff back and forth, just keep it. Call up your insurance company and tell them that you no longer use the car for work or school, and that any driving you do is 'recreational' (I believe that's the term). Tell them you'll probably be putting about 7,000mi per year on it. All of this info will drop your insurance rate a couple of bucks.
Then, in a few years when you get that high-powered job, you'll have a car that's close to paid off (if not paid off already) and has really low miles on it.
Posted by: shank at October 21, 2005 06:54 AMBefore I moved out to the sticks, I lived in this college town where parking is scarce but walking to stores isn't feasible and yet I lived for two years without a car.
I just made friends and went with them to the store if I needed to go.
I also hate driving in traffic.
My thought is: if there is any reasonable chance you can get away from having a car at all, I am for it.
But doesn't it get cold where you are? Are you gonna walk in the cold? When it's cold here it tends to rain and that is the definition of misery in my book.
Posted by: Trey Givens at October 21, 2005 07:49 AMCars are expensive from all sides, especially when you're in school and $ is at a premium. I wish I could walk everywhere I want to go, but it's a 25 km (15.5 miles) trek to work every day.
I say if you can do it, go for it, but if like sis said, the grocery stores etc. are a long ways off I'd think again. Oh, and is it the same for insurance as it is here? If you have no insurance for a certain amount of time they reset your rates to new driver?
