There's a boatload of trivia about the lyrics. Lots of people thought they were obscene and the song was banned in several places. The FBI investigated the lyrics (dunno on what grounds, but it was the 60's) and determined they could not figure out what was being sung.

Oh yeah, but I was talking about the Kingsmen version. Why did it end up sounding like it did.

One of the reasons the lyrics were so mangled was due to the fact that the lead singer, Ely, was singing with braces on his teeth and the recording engineer didn't want his spitting all over the brand new boom microphone. So he pulled it way too high for Ely, who basically had to jump to sing into the mike.
