Dad works for the railroad, so I learned early on that you stop at the crossings when a train is coming. Then if the train is half a mile down the tracks and going about 2 miles an hour, proceed to cross. But don't go around any barriers.
So whenever I hear about some schmuck who attempted to beat the train, I figure they got what they deserved, and it was that whole Darwin-thing at work.
But this is a new twist...slamming into a stopped train?

Hell, I do--some idiot ran into a train!

I always found this to be a rude over-generalization, mind you.

In Texas, there is a joke about the graduate of a certain university who raced a freight train to a crossing, misjudged his timing, and hit the forty-third car.
