Mother Nature

She's a bitch. Iowa is having a rocky week of it, what with the tornadoes and torrential rains and flooding and whatnot.

Last night it was monsoon time. From my window I could vaguely make out the house across the street.

So at least we don't get hurricanes.

Let's look at the Fujita scale and the Saffir/Simpson scale.

The strongest SUSTAINED hurricane wind speeds correspond to a strong F3 (Severe Tornado) or possibly a weak F4 (Devastating Tornado) value.

So basically without the water all over the place, hurricanes are pussies. That's what I'm getting out of it anyway.

Yeah, but Tornado are pretty localized and don't last for hours. Plus the water thing really adds an extra dimension that you have to experience firsthand.

Pussies. (/end sarcasm) Tornado victims don't usually get a chance to gather their valuables and evacuate, either. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't know of a single hurricane that dropped on a town with little to no warning. Not in the age of radios and television, anyway.

Since radio, it got better... Before... http://www.disasterrelief.org/Disasters/980813Galveston/
What gets us mostly here from the few hurricanes we get, it the unexpected flooding... A few years ago, I was treated to waking up on an island, while I watched the town just upriver from us wash slowly by on the way out to the bay... I know, it wasn't just buildings in there.

I blogged about that a little:
