Anybody Else Smell That?

The title to the previous post shall now be explained:

When I was driving home late last night, I turned onto I-35 and as soon as I started heading north, I smelled that favorite of Iowa scents--the hog lot.

But I've never smelled that aroma in that location before. To my knowledge, there is NO hog lot in the vicinity. And it lasted all the way to my exit.

I fully expected to read about some horrible pig sh*t-spilling interstate incident this morning. So far, haven't found any. I'll have to break down and read offline news, I guess.

Ah, memories of Omaha.

Between the stockyards and the rendering plant, beautiful Bellevue.

I used to reflect, when the wind was from the south, on a hot summer afternoon, how almost poetic it was that I could look across the street at the Strategic Air Command Headquarters building, with the sharp odor of death wafting in the breeze...

Well, poetic in a twisted, dark, and disturbing sort of way, at any rate.

If you get off the highway and pass closer to the lots you get the smell and the added bonus of seeing a pile of dead hogs waiting to be picked up by the dead hog body garbage collectors.

If you are interested I can direct you to a lot in Greene county a few miles West of Ogden that offers that sublime mix of the aromatic and visual every Monday morning.
