Some people love to imagine a President Schwarzenegger...and those people even support an amendment which would allow foreign-born persons to become president.
But...do you really want to open up the possibility of anyone running for president? A Palestinian, perhaps? What if there came a day when the apologists were in the majority?
Posted by Jennifer at September 24, 2004 10:50 PMI look at it this way, people who have questionable loyalty to US sovereignty can ALREADY run. Look at Kerry, who wants to make US foreign policy decisions subject to UN approval.
Let the Dems run Yassir Arafat if they want. Figure the Repubs could answer with Ariel Sharon :-)
Let the voters decide whether the person's country of origin disqualifies him.

A one-word comment. "Caracalla".
Best,

Because this is short term thinking vs long term thinking?
Posted by: Rachel Ann at September 26, 2004 02:50 AMI think what you describe sounds more like a more powerful and respected UN. Sort of a 'World Government.' I would not want to live through that experiment. Oh, and totally DIGGIN' the black/purple theme.
Posted by: Todd at September 26, 2004 11:08 AMThe bills in congress right now state they would have to be a US citizen for at least 20 years before they could run, so it's not like anyone could come on over and run.
Plus with 20 years of citizenship you would have made either a postive or negitive image of yourself to the US by then.
Plus look at all the crap being dug up on Bush and Kerry right now, if there were anything negative in their past it would be dug up.
And if their views were that extreme to the average US citizen they wouldn't have a prayer of getting their name close to a ballot.
Posted by: Machelle at September 27, 2004 10:00 AMBeing a naturalized citizen of the US, I don't think anyone should vote for me
Posted by: Kin at September 28, 2004 04:41 AMI don't buy the argument about someone being here twenty years first. Two words: stealth candidate. Although I'm not sure that doesn't apply to Senator Kerrique as well, whether he was born here or not.
Bottom line, though, is I'm agin' it. And you're talking to someone who has a great deal of admiration for Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Gotta say no to Arnold. We probably have more permission for foreigners to enter the upper levels of governments then many countries.
Me.. I'd love to ADD a requirement that the canidate proves they can function in soceity on their own. That is to day.. get a job without any 'help' and live off the proceeds for say 4 years.
